Nitrous Oxide

Often called “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a safe, mild sedative used to relieve your child’s anxiety during short dental procedures. It is recommended for children with mild dental anxiety. The gas is administered through a nasal hood or “bubble gum nose” that delivers oxygen mixed with the medication.

Your child will be asked to breathe through their nose, sensing a faint, sweet smell. The sedation takes effect in about 5 minutes, and the mask stays on until the procedure is done. Your child will remain awake, feeling “happy,” with possible tingling in their fingers or toes, or a floating sensation.

After the procedure, your child will breathe pure oxygen for about 5 minutes to clear the nitrous oxide. They’ll leave the office feeling normal, with no lingering effects. To maximize the medication’s effect, it’s best to limit your child to a light meal before the procedure. This treatment reduces injury risks and creates a more pleasant experience for the patient.
